A new feature by writer John Cody on Pete's inspiration/motivations on life and music appears online at:ARTICLE by JOHN CODY
Pete's new commissioned piece for Gospel Choir and Jazz Orchestra, "The Good Shepherd", will receive its NYC premiere Saturday, May 10 at 1:30pm at Symphony Space, 95th St and Broadway, New York. The performance will feature the 82-voice Soul Voices Gospel Choir and the 17-piece Purchase Jazz Orchestra.
Pete's new recording,"Invisible Cities" a quintet date for Reservoir Music featuring Tim Hagans, Rich Perry, Ugonna Okegwo and Tom Melito, dropped officially in the U.S. in March 18 and is residing in the Top 20 of airplay nationally and is a pick at www.downbeat.com, where it received a FOUR STARS review from Ted Panken!
Jim Macnie, of the Village Voice, said this: "We know he’s a wicked pianist, but the new Invisible Cities reminds that his knack for small group arrangements gets deeper every year. It’s made by a quintet of dudes who don’t get enough props; under Malinverni’s guidance they sound like a rhythmically curious band that’s found a way to turn the commonplace—mainstream swing pieces—into something memorable".
Signed copies of "Invisible Cities", from Pete are available right now. Just send $20 to Malinverni Music, 241 Sixth Avenue, #1-C, NYC, NY 10014 and a copy will be on its way to you directly. Performances in support of the release include March 21 and 22 at NYC's Sweet Rhythm. If you'd like to purchase downloadable written music from the CD, preparation journals or downloadable recordings of rehearsals or live dates, contact Pete via petemalinverni@aol.com for info.
More exciting news: "The Good Shepherd Suite", Pete's commissioned extended piece for Gospel Choir and Jazz Orchestra based on Psalm 23, will be premiered in March of '08 by the Purchase College Jazz Orchestra and the Soul Voices in a joint concert at the Performing Arts Center and then in May at Symphony Space in NYC. The "Soul Voices", Pete's on-campus vocal group at Purchase College, has an enrollment of 86 singers this semester.
There is new video online of Pete's "Soul Voices", an 80-voice on-campus Gospel Choir at Purchase College. See it by going to Purchase.edu and clicking on the "Africa! link.
"Theme and Variations" and "Joyful!" continue to receive strong reviews.
In a new review of 'Theme and Variations' Chip Stern says, "a jazz pianist whose range of articulation, sense of clarity and concision, rhythmic exuberance and harmonic depth make for one of the finest solo piano recitals in my sonic menagerie".
"Joyful!" was given a spot on George Varga's national Top Ten list for 2006 Jazz recordings and receiving a nice notice from Joel Roberts in All About Jazz :ALL ABOUT JAZZ
Paul de Barros, Down Beat Magazine **** Four Stars---One of the 'Best Jazz Albums of the Year' "Pete Malinverni doesn't seem capable of playing a dishonest line."
